Nor is it my object to deprecate criticism - who, indeed, would think of breaking such a literary fly as this on the critical wheel? Still I wish to be allowed to explain how it has fallen to my lot to compile and put forth a work that so many others are more competent to. I, therefore, crave leave to enter on what I conceive to be a necessary preliminary explanation, which I hope will not be long or tedious.
